Who Benefits from DMI?

DMI supports babies and children with motor delays, from developing neck control to enhancing higher-level balance and coordination, regardless of cognitive abilities. We work with children as young as 2 months old. Please note that some therapists may have weight restrictions due to the need for lifting and handling during the therapy.

What Happens During DMI?

Following a brief assessment, the therapist selects exercises to challenge and develop the child’s motor skills and foundational milestones. Sessions involve varied sensory and motor challenges with repeated exercises to build automatic movements, improve balance, and enhance overall function. Exercises are performed on a tabletop or floor, tailored to the child’s abilities, and may include additional therapeutic techniques and equipment for optimal results.

DMI Focuses On:

  • Gross Motor Skills: Developing automatic movements from birth to promote neurological maturity.
  • Gradual Progression: Increasing exercise difficulty to foster greater independence.
  • Alignment and Postural Control: Enhancing anatomical alignment and postural control.
  • Range of Motion: Achieving muscle and joint flexibility through functional stretching.
  • Balance: Improving balance through targeted exercises.
  • Functional Movements: Facilitating milestones like rolling, sitting, standing, and walking.
  • Somatosensory Development: Using sensory feedback to refine balance, muscle control, and movement.
  • Modifying Tone and Reflexes: Normalizing movement patterns and integrating primitive reflexes.
  • Global Development: Supporting overall skill development as a by-product of intensive intervention.
